Music Room in Latvia
New Music Room in Latvia, learn about the impact of music therapy in special education.
"Harmonizing Hope: Music Therapy Transforms Lives in Riga, Latvia's Special School"

In 2023, we asked for funds to support ongoing efforts for children with disabilities in Latvia. Thanks to the generous contributions, the special school in Riga recently set up a music therapy room. A big thank you to everyone who pitched in.

What is the impact of music therapy in special education.

Ever wondered about the role of music in special education? Music therapists are using this powerful tool to help students develop crucial skills beyond the realm of music. Their focus is on improving communication, academics, and behavior engagement for special education students.

Music therapy goes beyond creating melodies; it becomes a medium for students to explore their potential. Therapists design activities tailored to individual needs, providing a comfortable outlet for expression and communication.

One notable outcome is the improvement of communication skills. Musical interactions create a non-threatening environment, allowing students to express themselves freely and effectively.

Moreover, music therapy positively influences academic performance by enhancing cognitive skills like memory, attention, and problem-solving. Strengthening these skills contributes to improved academic achievements.

Behavioral improvements are also evident. The engagement with music provides a positive channel for energy, leading to transformations in attentiveness, focus, and social interaction.

In essence, music therapy becomes a powerful ally in the journey of special education students, fostering holistic development. It’s not just about melodies; it’s about growth, communication, and positive impacts on academics and behavior. As educators explore innovative ways to support special education, the harmonious integration of music therapy promises transformative outcomes.

Ariadna Kostina, the music teacher and therapist, expressed her gratitude:

“I want to thank you for upgrading the music therapy room and getting essential musical instruments. This effort is crucial for the well-being and development of the kids and has also been a significant part of my professional growth. Using music in play and various activities helps children develop in all areas.”

Music has been used as therapy at the special school in Riga, and thanks to donors from Hoppets Stjärna and local partner Velki Association, a music therapy room was established during the fall. This room plays a vital role in helping children achieve their individual goals. It’s equipped with a variety of musical instruments, materials, and organized following music therapy techniques. The school now has a special room tailored to the individual needs of students, considering their strengths and weaknesses.

The modern equipment includes drums, microphones, synthesizers, electric drums, and ukulele with sound amplifiers. These instruments help kids boost self-realization and confidence by learning to play music and even composing their own.

A big shoutout to everyone who contributed!
